We had an amazing Night Hike with our Urban Park Rangers this past Saturday! We had about two dozen people enjoy the park tour and chats about nocturnal animals. Thank you to Ranger AJ and Ranger Joshua for coming to Crocheron & John Golden Park to lead this tour. At the end of the tour, they also met two 111th pct NYPD officers who were called to the park about an injured possum, fulfilling the Ranger's other important job, helping animals in distress in NYC Parks ? #parksdontjusthappen #nycparks #urbanparkrangers #parks #nequeens #queensny #baysideny #ourpark #crocheronpark #johngoldenpark #nighthike

Thank you to this mother daughter duo for weeding and tilling the Mrs. Cilmi Garden Bed behind PS41! Mugworts are tall invasives so we are happy to pull dozens before they fully root. The extra light and nutrients in the soil will give the pollinators we planted in '21-'23 a better chance to thrive. Thank you to the NYC Parks workers who carried off the weeds and litter for us! Our district has been without a gardener for over a year due to Parks hiring freeze, .5% for parks is not enough. We found all of our coral bells were leveled by an overzealous weedwacker. These are cornerstone plants of our garden and provide 2 to 3 feet of shaded area to reduce invasive weeds - plus they are seriously good native pollinators. Swipe to see what these majestic plants can look like. Volunteers cannot replace city workers and cannot fix mistakes undertrained workers make. It’s a reminder that land and legacy aren’t only for the people who have lived somewhere the longest. Living in the most diverse place in the world #queensny this is pretty clear to us. Joseph Crocheron, a guy from Staten Island who owned a hotel on Little Neck Bay in the 1800s. His successful hotel and legacy led the park to be named after him. For decades, NYC Parks historians had the story wrong, instead of being from Staten Island, the story was that the Crocheron family had lived in Bayside since the 1600s. Thanks to genealogist Charlotte Megill Hix's work on Crocheron's family history and our group's collaboration with Urban Park Rangers - NYC Parks update the park’s history to show the truth. Updating public history is about honoring our past honestly - likewise removing historically accurate information, no matter how unsettling, is a disservice for all. Our first NYC Parks Stewardship event was a huge success! Thank you to @nycparks Stewardship Team for coming out and to the over 20 volunteers who braved the damp morning. John, one of our volunteer Park Stewards, worked with Stewardship to plan and lead the event. We were able to tackle a ton of invasives around the western end of the pond, opening up the view and some space for native plantings. Volunteers also cleaned up trash and fishing litter. We look forward to more events like this. This spring, look out for another insavive removal event and a native planting event. Thank you to everyone for voicing your view on the proposed bubble - we are thrilled to say NYC Parks Concession actually made an error and is looking for a food/beverage concession not to enclose the courts and privatize recreation. We were also told that the RFP does not mean a proposal will be chosen. This type of concession is something that our group would support, as it is not traditional work done by NYC Parks and would be a value add for recreation. We do hope that these funds go to NYC Parks directly, especially as Parka still receives >1% of the City budget (other US city parks get 2-3%). The NYC Parks Concessions Unit had a miscommunication and presented the idea of the bubble in error. Within 3 hours of our group reaching out Wednesday morning, the Queens Borough President Richards' Office Parks Liaison, Laura, had not received the 40 days notice of the RFP and helped to unravel the issue, that it is for a food concession not a bubble. The CB11Q informed me that they had been working with Councilwoman Paladino, who is also opposed to this type of construction. Thank you to everyone that signed and shared, amazing to have over 630 signatures online in just a few days, added to paper signatures we have 670! Our organization will be exploring the option to request that Crocheron & John Golden Park be designated as a Scenic Landmark by the NYC Landmark Preservation Committee. If you are knowledgeable about the Landmark Preservation process, a great writer or researcher, or know someone that is, please get in touch with us!! We connected with neighbors who had the courage to talk with our volunteers about their difficulties - and also worked with local community groups, organizations, schools, and places of worship. We are thankful to NewYork-Presbyterian for the funding to do this through their mini-grant program, and our fiscal sponsor FJC for their ongoing partnership. Thanks to a donation from a community member, in memory of Ruth Helen Feinberg Markovitz, we handed out more produce today, including 11 bags for families at a local middle school. Thank you to the community leaders who made this all possible and thank you to @gardenofevefarm for delivering fresh veggies and fruit. And of amazing volunteers, including Khalil who worked with us during our food giveaways in 2021. Keep Crocheron Tennis & Pickle Ball Courts Open and Public - please sign petition today! Link is in our bio. NYC Parks Concession is looking to put out a Request for Proposals for a private vendor to manage the courts from October to April. This would mean that existing tennis passes will not apply - players will have to pay the vendor's rate. Similar places charge between $35 and $70 dollars an hour, depending on demand. The bubble would also greatly alter the landscape and community of the park. What is now a natural environment with historic buildings will be shaded out by large white manufactured bubble. NYC Parks Concession is looking to put out a Request for Proposals for a private vendor to manage the courts from October to April. This would mean that existing tennis passes will not apply - players will have to pay the vendor's rate. Similar places charge between $35 and $70 dollars an hour, depending on demand. The bubble would also greatly alter the landscape and community of the park. What is now a natural environment with historic buildings will be shaded out by large white manufactured bubble. Go to crocheronpark.org/advocacy-webinar "The Udalls Cove Preservation Committee (UCPC) is one of Queens' oldest conservation groups. Founded in 1969 by the legendary Aurora Gareiss, it's mission is "CPR" -- the Conservation, Preservation and Restoration of the last remaining undeveloped wetlands and woodlands in the Udalls Cove watershed. (Udalls Cove is the eastern arm of Little Neck Bay, part of Long Island Sound.) UCPC has been largely successful: most of the area, on both sides of the Queens/Nassau County line, is now preserved as parkland; at our urging, the City Parks Department carried out a major restoration project in the park; UCPC itself has carried out restoration and improvement projects valued at over $300,000; and UCPC has expanded its stewardship work to the northeast portion of Alley Pond Park. These accomplishments were achieved through strong support from the community and our local government officials. An amazing scientific performance, with drama and jokes - a la Mad Science! Thank you to our amazing community for being both the best audience and donating to Friends, allowing us to schedule this event (especially big shout out to Lenny!). This year, Mad Science presented What Do We Know About H2O? One of their newest experiments, O'Rourke's location near Golden Pond made it a perfect match. The event had a special presentation from our local Girl Scout, Emi. This past summer Emi has been working with fellow community scientists, like Mike Feller and Dana Gumb, to study both the quality of the water and its depth. We are thrilled to have had the pleasure to partner with her and have her talk about her findings. Friends will continue to work towards a cleanup of the pond, one of a few fresh water ponds in a wetland. Bell and Northern flooded at least once before, in 1933, from remnants of a hurricane. NYC is now a subtropical climate zone, so we all need to be prepared for floods. As a park conservation organization, our diverse group of volunteers continue to work with the city and our nonprofit partners, like @the_sca, to fortify Golden Pond. Bell and Northern flooded at least once before, in 1933, from remnants of a hurricane. NYC is now a subtropical climate zone, so we all need to be prepared for floods. As a park conservation organization, our diverse group of volunteers continue to work with the city and our nonprofit partners, like @the_sca, to fortify Golden Pond.
