Say hello to our big friend! This ginkgo is an OG legend, 40 years ago it was officially named a #greattree by @nycparks! Nominated by residents nominated their local towering ginkgo tree. We love the Great Trees of NYC tag addition, cozy next to our arboretum's multilingual tree tag. Legend ties this ginkgo to none other than Boss Tweed, the infamous Tammany Hall leader. After being locked up in Ludlow Street Jail in the 1870s he was unable to afford his staggering $3 million bail (w/ inflation, that is $73.24 million today). Tweed was allowed brief home visits. During one such visit on December 4, 1875, he visited the Crocheron House and fled the country. He ended up in Span sbefore being recaptured and returned to the U.S., due to the famous Nash political cartoons people easily recognized him. As this tree stands just steps from where Tweed is said to have hidden out, it’s not just a beautiful ginkgo, but a living witness to one of the City's wildest political tales! 🌳 Thank You for Making Our First Tree Appreciation Day a Success! 🌳 Despite the chilly weather and a touch of Jersey haze, we were thrilled to see such a fantastic turnout. Over 300 trees found new homes, thanks to our amazing partners at Bartlett Tree Experts! We are happy to have not only given trees out to our parkgoers, but to have also partnered with local nonprofits and religious institutions. The day was packed with excitement—dozens joined our arboretum tours, enjoyed Ranger’s nature puppet show, explored inspiring environmental tables, watched pruning demonstrations of 2 unsafe trees - and gave back through watering, mulching, and litter removal. A huge shoutout to our dedicated Friends' volunteers, Udall Cove Preservation Committee, @qcbirdclub, and @dogsofbaysideproject for bringing nature to life! According to the @nycparks website: "Pollinator Place Gardens New York City's pollinators play an important role in growing our food and gardens and supporting our city's plant and wildlife biodiversity. Unfortunately, pollinators are suffering because of climate change, habitat loss, and competition for resources from non-native species. To help support bees, moths, butterflies, and other essential native pollinators, we're growing Pollinator Places in our parks! At our Pollinator Place gardens, we're growing native plants year-round that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also beneficial to a diverse population of pollinators as well as birds and small mammals. This summer, NYC Parks and The Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment will host family-friendly movie showings across the five boroughs. Raphael, Leonardo, Donatello, and Michelangelo are four turtle brothers with a unique set of skills and a penchant for mischief, which runs them afoul of New York City. Yet when a horde of sinister mutants begins to wreak havoc, the city must learn to rely on the turtles if they are to be saved. Movies begin at dusk. This event is FREE and open to the public. Thank you to everyone that came out to City of Water Day Cleanup! Especially on a day that ended up being wetter than expected, and super muggy. We were able to spread people out around the pond, ball fields, and inside of the tennis house. We learned about climate/Ida's wrath on the parkland and how bad infastructure is harming the pond. Grateful for the hard work today of AYLUS Oakland Gardens! We had 25 kids and teens along with a half dozen parents help cleanup the garden bed. You can see them here removing plants from the border to prepare for mulch and paint, along with removing weeds. We have FABULOUS NEWS! Our District 19 City Council Rep, @cmpaladino has allocated $297K to renovate the two Gazebos at Crocheron Park! Anyone that has walked this section of the park knows this has been an ongoing issue. We have been following up with Parks for years and they are unable to fix it with their usual carpentary team. These gazebos were part of the original construction of the park in the 1930s. For generations, they have welcomed people to the view of the bay and provided a little culture to parkgoers. We are grateful to Coucil Member Paladino for her ongoing committment to our 62 acres of parkland. Without her support, our park's infastructure would continue to decay and prehaps not be around for future generations. These are also critical health and safety improvements too, needed to keep the gazebos from falling onto parkgoers. Thank you to our CM and her dedicated staff for helping make parks happen!
