Thank you to this mother daughter duo for weeding and tilling the Mrs. Cilmi Garden Bed behind PS41! Mugworts are tall invasives so we are happy to pull dozens before they fully root. The extra light and nutrients in the soil will give the pollinators we planted in '21-'23 a better chance to thrive. Thank you to the NYC Parks workers who carried off the weeds and litter for us! Our district has been without a gardener for over a year due to Parks hiring freeze, .5% for parks is not enough. We found all of our coral bells were leveled by an overzealous weedwacker. These are cornerstone plants of our garden and provide 2 to 3 feet of shaded area to reduce invasive weeds - plus they are seriously good native pollinators. John Golden bequeathed the land to the city, leaving it “for the use and enjoyment by the young people of the community of all races and creeds in a manner similar to which I made this property available for recreation and community acts during my lifetime.” We are grateful to continue this work as stewards of our public park, creating a multilingual arboretum, free community events, food giveaways for those in need, and a successful petition to keep the courts open & public. Thank you to everyone for voicing your view on the proposed bubble - we are thrilled to say NYC Parks Concession actually made an error and is looking for a food/beverage concession not to enclose the courts and privatize recreation. We were also told that the RFP does not mean a proposal will be chosen. This type of concession is something that our group would support, as it is not traditional work done by NYC Parks and would be a value add for recreation. We do hope that these funds go to NYC Parks directly, especially as Parka still receives >1% of the City budget (other US city parks get 2-3%). The NYC Parks Concessions Unit had a miscommunication and presented the idea of the bubble in error. Within 3 hours of our group reaching out Wednesday morning, the Queens Borough President Richards' Office Parks Liaison, Laura, had not received the 40 days notice of the RFP and helped to unravel the issue, that it is for a food concession not a bubble. The CB11Q informed me that they had been working with Councilwoman Paladino, who is also opposed to this type of construction. Thank you to everyone that signed and shared, amazing to have over 630 signatures online in just a few days, added to paper signatures we have 670! Our organization will be exploring the option to request that Crocheron & John Golden Park be designated as a Scenic Landmark by the NYC Landmark Preservation Committee. This fall, we have been providing Free Farm Boxes to neighbors in need. We connected with neighbors who had the courage to talk with our volunteers about their difficulties - and also worked with local community groups, organizations, schools, and places of worship. We are thankful to NewYork-Presbyterian for the funding to do this through their mini-grant program, and our fiscal sponsor FJC for their ongoing partnership. Thanks to a donation from a community member, in memory of Ruth Helen Feinberg Markovitz, we handed out more produce today, including 11 bags for families at a local middle school. Thank you to the community leaders who made this all possible and thank you to @gardenofevefarm for delivering fresh veggies and fruit. And of amazing volunteers, including Khalil who worked with us during our food giveaways in 2021. Bell and Northern flooded at least once before, in 1933, from remnants of a hurricane. NYC is now a subtropical climate zone, so we all need to be prepared for floods. As a park conservation organization, our diverse group of volunteers continue to work with the city and our nonprofit partners, like @the_sca, to fortify Golden Pond. New book just dropped for the Crocheron Little Library! Who Cleans the Park? is a must read for all NYC Parks advocates. Resrarch by CUNY Professor John Krinsky and his coauthor Maud Simonet is laid out it help explain how NYC Paeks manages its 30,000+ acres of parkland on a shoe string budget - less than 1% of city budgets goes to parks while other large US cities provide 2-3% of their budget to parks. The bubble gum and tape that Parks uses to do this includes volunteers, union workers, and non-union workers of conservancies (like Central Park or Prospect Park). Creative solutions to funding issues and the work environment that changes as flagship parks become privatized. Say hello to our big friend! This ginkgo is an OG legend, 40 years ago it was officially named a #greattree by @nycparks! Nominated by residents nominated their local towering ginkgo tree. We love the Great Trees of NYC tag addition, cozy next to our arboretum's multilingual tree tag. Legend ties this ginkgo to none other than Boss Tweed, the infamous Tammany Hall leader. After being locked up in Ludlow Street Jail in the 1870s he was unable to afford his staggering $3 million bail (w/ inflation, that is $73.24 million today). Tweed was allowed brief home visits. During one such visit on December 4, 1875, he visited the Crocheron House and fled the country. He ended up in Span sbefore being recaptured and returned to the U.S., due to the famous Nash political cartoons people easily recognized him. As this tree stands just steps from where Tweed is said to have hidden out, it’s not just a beautiful ginkgo, but a living witness to one of the City's wildest political tales!
