Boss Tweed is arguably the most well known and most corrupt NYC politicians. Over the course of his political career he created a positions for allies and embezzled 6 million dollars. Images show Tweed's depiction by Thomas Nast. Nast, a political cartoonist, helped to bring down Tweed and his Tammany Hall Crew. 

According to the legend, Tweed escaped from Ludlow Street Jail during a weekend home visit, leaving from the Crocheron House boat dock and continuing onto Spain. He was recognized in Spain, from one of the Nast cartoons, and soon taken back to New York City. He died custody at in 1878 at the age of 55.
