We had a great yoga class with @akebma_yoga_art , our first time inside the Tennis Court House. Thank you to Ambeka for helping give the floor a deep clean before the class, to make it into more of a yoga studio. And we also had a first event using our ponchos, first time cleaning the interior of the Tennis Court House, and first time serving sandwiches to our volunteers. We are happy to announce that our lovely gazebos will have a visit from the new parks carpenter. The northern one needs some serious repairs. These were built during the park’s construction in the 30s. They weathered a number of storms and other vandalism. Bricks are falling apart and it would be quite a bit of money to repair them. Hoping that we can find a suitable state or federal grant for these historic structures. Until then, work that Parks does in house is exciting! #parksdontjusthappen #nycparks #crocheronpark

The privatization of our city’s public parks creates inequalities. A donation to a private independent nonprofit should not speed up planting request of a public street tree by @nycparks . The most astounding thing that I have realized from founding Friends of Crocheron is how we are selling off management of our public land. @cpfnyc has a history of accepting funds to expiate or even allow regular use of parks. Check out what @paulvallone killed requiring exorbitant donations to @cpfnyc for large events in NYC Parks. @cpfnyc are also the only one that can be a steward of fiscally sponsored groups discretionary funds, conflict of interest much? So groups like ours, who use a fiscal sponsor that better fits our organizations business model, are not allowed to directly receive funds from @cmvpaladino . So @nycparks has to be steward of it, and work within their mind boggling bureaucratic system. @nyccouncil will soon be debating this, hopefully the large influx of cash @nycmayor gave to MOCS, Mayors Office Contract Services, means nonprofits do not need to scramble as much. This is not a ‘me problem’ but a ‘we as nonprofit development officers problem’. Thank you to @thecityny and Tanaz Meghjani for reporting on the two tier system for New Yorkers to have a street tree planted. Just a bit of the unnatural relationship between a private foundation and one of the largest urban public park systems. @govkathyhochul @johnliuny please codify the rules for public private partnerships. Last year this was mugwort filled area between two ball fields. Hurricane Ida destroyed our parkland. Unprecedented flooding caused a private homes retaining wall to fail, sending tons of debris into the park and pond. Parks does not have the funds to clean it up. The private homeowner who is responsible, is not acting with concern for their property destroying #ourpark. While @nyc_dob refuses to call a spade a spade. This is an environmental catastrophe. The pond and park have sand, concrete, piping, random manufactures materials littered about. It has been a year and one of the biggest cleanups were by our volunteers. And a plywood wall does not protect people from a landslide that includes a concrete wall. @nycpublicadvocate @nyccomptroller must take action to protect our publicly owned parks. #parksdontjusthappen #nycparks #hurricaneida

“We're continuing to sound the alarm - the number of birds tragically caught in glue tape traps set out for Spotted Lanternfly remediation grows daily: more than 60 birds already this year. This nuthatch had nearly ALL of its wing and tail feathers stuck, and one particularly nasty piece of glue tape caught an entire family of birds. While the Spotted Lanternfly is of great concern in our area, the unintended consequences of this method of remediation far outweigh its effectiveness, and in some cases the bycatch victims are they very things that might prey upon the Lanternflies in the first place. A wildlife-safe alternative is this "circle trap," being used very effectively in Pennsylvania. https://extension.psu.edu/how-to-build-a-new-style-spotted-lanternfly-circle-trap ( https://tinyurl.com/Lanternflytrap ) If you must use the sticky tape traps (though we advise alternative methods), you can make them somewhat safer for birds and small mammals by wrapping a cover of small mesh wire over the tape at least an inch away from the tape. The wire mesh needs to be small enough to keep birds out, but the Lanternflies can still get in. Half inch "hardware cloth" is a good option. Edited by another Bayside native, Todd McTigue, this PG-13 film will have you on the edge of your picnic blanket! Film will be followed by a Q&A with the director/writer/actor Seth McTigue. We are so happy to have made this connection with Seth to bring something special to Our Park.
